Face Forward ( Rivalry – Abby Sciuto )
She sat in her lab, loud music was blaring from the speakers. She knew that Gibbs hated it when she turned the volume to max and quite frankly she was glad that she worked in the basement. Since she was the only one here no one ever complained about her music. But right now she couldn’t care less, she herself hardly noticed the music since she was lost in thought. She was trying to make sense of her own feelings.
Today six months ago was the day that Kate got shot, their colleague Caitlin Todd. And Abby still missed her dearly. Kate – though they where completely different, and they where an odd pair – had been her best friend.
Kate might not have been as open minded as Abby and she might not have understood all the things that Abby liked to do. She had accepted Abby for who she was and even despite the differences they where there for each other. But six months ago she had lost that in an instance without a warning and without a chance to say goodbye. She was still mad at herself for ignoring the dream that she had. She had a bad feeling when she got up that morning, but she ignored it.
And before she knew it the team got a replacement at first the guys had showed some weak attempts to stop the beautiful Israeli liaison officer from Mossad to infiltrate in their inner circles. But all attempts had prevailed prematurely and Kate’s desk was taken hostage by the strange emotionless woman with the words ‘Kate would not mind me sitting at her desk’. A Mossad assassin, that was at least what the rumor mill said.
Kate was killed by an Israeli terrorist, and Abby expected Officer David to be here to spy on them. She sure had Gibbs, McGee and Tony wrapped around her finger with her honey sweet accent and her mistaken American idioms. And even though Tony acted as if the mistakes that the Israeli made annoyed him, Abby knew better. She had watched him stare at her ass when he was sure that the Israeli had no idea that he was watching her.
McGee was just scared of her, he believed everything that was being said in the hallways. Able to kill a man with a paperclip eighteen different ways, Abby thought. She was able to kill a person without leaving a trace, that is who they should be scared off.
And then there was Gibbs, she had no idea what had gotten into him. At first he had wanted the Israeli gone as much as she wanted her gone but all of the sudden he had turned and now he accepted her completely. And Abby was sure that he wasn’t scared of her because she had seen him headslap her like he does with Tony all the time.
Not to mention the Director, Jenny Shepard and Ziva David shared a past together. Though no one really knew what that meant – they had worked together on an Anti Terrorism Task Force in Europe and Egypt – they never heard any details on those missions. Not from Director Shepard nor from Ziva David or the rumor mill. But Abby was quite sure that Ziva couldn’t do anything wrong in the Directors eyes.
And then Ducky, he had surprised her the most. He and Ziva took pleasure in drinking tea together on their breaks. Ducky never asked her to drink tea with him, not that she drank tea but that was besides the point.
The point was that she hated Ziva David because she replaced Kate in every single way. Except where she needed Ziva the most replacing Kate as her best friend. And though Abby did not act nice towards Ziva she should understand that she was grieving the loss of her best friend and that she needed a friend who could understand that.

Leave out all the rest ( Regret – Jenny Shepard )
Jen had heard what had happened, she was the Director of NCIS. Of course she would hear these things as soon as they happened. A tear threatening to fall blinded her eyes as she gazed over the Navy Yard awaiting the teams return. The second she noticed the arrival of the NCIS van and sedan in the parking lot she turned away from the window. She sighed, her arms still crossed over her chest. She breathed in deeply and wiped away the tears from her eyes. She was not giving up, not yet.
“Special Agent Gibss, what happened to Officer David?” NCIS Director Jen Shepard – she already knew what had happened but she wanted to get the confirmation from Gibbs – asked as she came down the last flight of stairs towards Gibbs and his remaining team members.
Gibbs looked up at her as she remained standing on the last step of the stairs. Jen diverted her attention from Gibbs to Tony and McGee who where standing behind him. Pained expressions edged on their faces mixed with concern. He knew what she was doing, she called Ziva ‘Officer David’ she was distancing herself from her friend, after all Jen Shepard and Ziva David shared a past together, they worked on a anti terrorism task force in East Europe and Egypt.
No one said a word, they all waited till Gibbs started to talk. “We where working the crime scene, I told Ziva that I wanted her to take the perimeter. I was inside questioning an eye witness, Tony was drawing up the crime scene and McGee was taking pictures.” Gibbs stopped for a second, he wanted to get the details out right. “All of the sudden there was a lot of shouting and shooting outside. But by the time we got outside we could only see a van speed off. McGee tried to take a picture so we might have a number plate to run. But if they are smart they probably ditched the van by now.” He turned back to his team members; “McGee, get a BOLO out. DiNozzo, start calling in favors maybe there is someone who knows more about this.” He barked out commands to his team members. Normally she would have made a comment if she heard him bark to them like that but right now she figured that it was what they needed. Both of the men scrambled to their computers and started working on them.
“Special Agent Gibbs…” Jen started to say something, but she knew that it was futile. She knew that if she told Gibbs that it was bureaus policy to let another team investigate this that he wouldn’t listen to it anyway. And besides that Gibbs had the best team, and if there was someone she would trust to find Ziva back it was Gibbs and his team. “Bring her back …” She added defeated, she prayed that they would find Ziva in time. She gave the order knowing that if there was anyone who could bring her back it was most likely Special Agent Gibbs. He was one of the few persons who was able to keep his own feelings out of his job until he was done.
As the Director of NCIS she had to be objective if something happened to one of her officers. She was the one that had to make the tough choices. And relating to the person who was in danger prevented her from being objective and if something went wrong it would haunt her for the rest of her life. She made her way back to her office, she laughed bitterly as if this was not going to haunt her for the rest of her life she thought to herself. She opened her desk drawer and took out her gun. Her hand graced the bottle of liquor. That she kept there for moments when cases like this one where closed. She hoped that when this case closed she would be drinking to celebrate and not to forget the horrible details that plagued her minds eye.

Show me the way
Ziva watched as Abby fired a gun into ‘the water tank’ so that she could compare the bullet. “You’re doing it wrong.” Ziva had said; “Here let me show you.” At first Abby thought that Ziva had made that comment to belittle her. But Ziva had looked sincere in her offer to help Abby. She looked up at Abby with an expectant smile. Abby had smiled back and Ziva stepped closer to her, close enough for full body contact.
Ziva had positioned herself behind Abby, her hand slowly traveling down her upper leg, sliding it backwards. “Okay, if you slide your heel further back it’ll decrease your exposure.” Decreasing my exposure, who says I want to decrease my exposure. Abby thought to herself purposely misunderstanding Ziva but not saying a word. As far as the two of them concerned this was the first time that Ziva tried to get closer to her, instead of the other way around. Up until now Abby had thought that Ziva didn’t like her, she had always seemed so distant and professional.
Gently, Ziva guided Abby’s body into a better position. Abby smiled. For a woman as tough as Ziva she sure had a gentle way of touching her.
“Won’t that throw off my lateral balance?” She had asked Ziva, to show her that she did know what she was talking about. After all, balance was important. Although it might not seem that way. She was a forensic specialist, not a special agent. Knowing how to shoot was not necessary for her. And as long as she fired into ‘the water tank’ no one was complaining about how she did it.
“Balance isn’t usually the primary concern on a mission.” One hand was wrapped around her body resting just above her left hip. She could feel Ziva’s hot breath on her neck, it made the little hairs on her scalp raise. A shiver went down her spine.
“What is?” She asked pretty sure that the answer would be something so obvious that she could have guessed it herself. But right now her mind seemed blank, she really couldn’t form a comprehensive sentence.
She was sure that neither she nor Ziva had heard Gibbs come in when he suddenly spoke up. Of course knowing Gibbs she should have expected that he would turn up just at the right moment to ruin a perfect situation. After all she had called him and told him that she had some results for him, and as usual it never took long for him to arrive at the lab.
“The guy shooting back. Which is what I’m going to start doing if you two don’t get back to work.” Gibbs voice startled them both.
Abby felt Ziva flinch, as did she but she didn’t show it. She was glad that Ziva and she finally seemed to get a little closer. Of course Gibbs was right, but her machines never shot back and she wasn’t trained to be in a situation where someone would be shooting back at her. Even though she herself had been shot at, she tried to get rid of the thoughts that came into her mind. Way too dark and depressing!

Ironic
Abby was stressing over Tony not being back from vacation yet, he should have been at the bull pen already. He took his chance and was playing a game on his computer while waiting for Tony to arrive. He wasn’t worried, besides Tony, Ziva hadn’t arrived at work either so there wasn’t much he could do.
“Well , I am eating for two.” Abby stated, still facing the computer screen in front of her. McGee was sitting in his chair, he immediately moved forward and looked at her. It was amazing how many thoughts can be processed by the mind in the mere seconds between her speaking the first sentence and realizing that what she had said. She was typing away at his keyboard when she had realized that he had moved forward, she looked at him before she opened her mouth. “Relax. I was referring to the health food freak over there. Every time I go past her desk, I have this irresistible urge to shove a cheeseburger down her throat.”
In that small window of opportunity images flashed before his eyes, burned on his minds’ eye. Abby pregnant, himself holding a baby, their baby. He and Abby as a family, guardians for their child.
He couldn’t help that the images returned when he was home a couple of days later while he was sitting behind his desk ready to write another chapter for his novel. Finally at work things had settled down and Ziva was cleared of all charges. He finally got some spare time after work, but he couldn’t concentrate, his thoughts kept returning to that moment a couple of mornings back when he thought for a second that Abby choose that moment to tell him that she was pregnant.
He wondered what he would have done if that was what happened. Of course he would have done what was right by Abby and the baby. That was just his nature, the way he would react to a situation like that always do what was expected.
But he wasn’t so sure that it would be the perfect solution. He pouted his lips and looked at the blank page in his type writer. He had not written down a single word this night though he had been sitting here for over an hour. Sure Abby and he had been good friends, more even. Well they couldn’t be called lovers, but at least they where friends with benefits. Not quite the kind of relationship he wanted but it wasn’t just up to him, was it?
He took a sip from his now cold coffee. Sure he wanted kids one day, but not right now and not this way. So for that he was glad that he just misunderstood Abby’s comment. He smiled as he thought about her, he got up and walked over to his kitchen where he retrieved a new cup of steaming hot coffee. He sat back down at his table, shoved some papers aside and started writing on his newest paragraph.
